There is no legitimate “conservative” case that can be made for the UBI, and I would never view the UK as an iconic pillar of conservative efficiency.

I rather believe the US should set the example for the UK with free speech, gun rights, proper legitimate immigration, government deregulation, and lower taxes.
The Atlantic has indeed become a rag but that's not the only place I've seen conservatives argue for a UBI.... I'm not sure any previous paradigm -- whether left or right -- can account for where we are going.... We are, in my estimation, on the verge of a period of transformation unprecedented in human history. I believe that AI + quantum computing is going to make the Industrial Revolution look like the invention of the pet rock.
Just now? Because of AI? Most colleges went off the rails with their expensive useless fluff degrees and leftist indoctrination years ago.
However, if AI forces the realignment of our colleges to drop all of the leftist indoctrination, and go back to issuing meaningful and useful degrees - in the same way that AI has quashed dirty green energy - then we’ll be able to claim the second direct benefit of AI hype.
The UBI in different forms and monikers has been tried throughout history, and its results are always progressively higher oppressive inflation for all, and destitute poverty for a majority. What happens when a future poverty-stricken majority decides en masse they no longer care for the taste of UBI cake?
Quantum computing is circling the drain. Someone must have looked at it. Probably investors. No ROI.
All of the AI hype… has given us one direct benefit in that it has more or less quashed the dirty green energy movement due to its power requirements. However, even the fiction of fusion energy won’t be enough to turn that frog into a prince.
Mark my words - AI will collapse soon. Could be in a couple of weeks, or in a couple of years, but it will collapse.
We already have an alternative to AI that works well, is waaay more efficient, and - bonus - it doesn’t drift, hallucinate, lie, or plot our demise.
